Cast iron signal cannon with ring mount; on modern stained wood stand. 10" high x 24" long x 8.5 " deep Inscribed " This cannon was made in 1865, has been fired only in the event of Republican presidential victories and is presented by C.H. Fling who has had possession of it for over thirty years. Hamilton Hall, Robert Woods and Harry Wheeler were the originators and Captain Charles H. Tobey of the Old Starch Works, the maker." Display card description, "This cannon was forged in 1865. Wilfred D. Wiehn Jr. of Glen Head restored it in December of 2007. At the suggestion of his wife, Deborah, it was loaned to the Glen Cove Public Library, for as long as it shall be publicly displayed here, in memory of Ethel and William Hults, his grandparents, and proprietors of the Glen Cove Tavern. William and Ethel founded the City's first tavern in the early 1900s, serving food and drink to the local businessmen and the tradespeople of Glen Cove, who built and maintained the Gold Coast mansions of that era. Many former employees of the then defunct Duryea Starch Works were also patrons. The tavern was located at 10 Pulaski Street. |
