Description |
Grove Street - Members of the Carbuto family and neighbors cavort on Grove Street. The Orchard was once a complete Italian village within a seven-block triangle. The backyards were miniature farms complete with goats, pigs and chickens and lush gardens of tomatoes, basil, grapes and figs. The area had its own butchers, bakers, restaurants, hairdressers and a favorite candy store with a potbellied stove. Most residents emigrated from the town of Sturno, in the Province of Avellino in the Campania region or from the region of Calabria. (Caption courtesy of Joan Harrison) |
