Description |
Early Starch Works - Glen Cove was one of the major manufacturing cities on Long Island in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Starch Works, followed by a leather belting concern (Ladew) were its earliest industries. Here local children play in front of the new starch plant. Wright Duryea incorporated the Glen Cove Starch Manufacturing Company in the mid 1800s, drawn by the abundant pure water, locally grown corn and ease of shipping. When the Duryea's Oswego plant failed, the rest of the family joined the successful Glen Cove venture. (Caption courtesy of Joan Harrison) |
