Description |
Five-and-dime tycoon F.W. Woolworth had the palatial 56-room Winfield Hall built in1916 in North Country Colony. The C.P.H. Gilbert Beaux-Arts mansion, which replaced an earlier house destroyed by fire, has a magnificent marble staircase and an Aeolian pipe organ. Woolworth died in his home in 1919 of an abscessed tooth only four years after the house was finished. (Caption courtesy of Joan Harrison) |
