Description |
First Presbyterian Church at 7 North Lane. Many of the first Presbyterians worked in the Duryea Starch Works before 1900. Services were held south of the ponds in Continental Hall, owned by Wright Duryea, president of the factory. In 1876 an exquisite.small church was built on Hendrick Avenue. It had sofa pews of of black walnut and stained-glass windows. When the congregation outgrew it in 1905, land was secured on the corner of North Lane and School Street, and the present church was built. (Caption courtesy of Joan Harrison) |
