Description |
Isaac Bessel was a horse farmer and feed dealer. He came to Glen Cove with his wife, Esther, and settled on Back Road Hill c 1800. Bessel owned a Torah, and his house became a stopping place for Jewish travelers unable to reach home before Sabbath. As the community grew, services were held in the opera house on Continental Place. In 1906, Isaac was elected first president of the Congregation Tifereth Israel. The Bessel Torah is still used during Saturday Services. |
