Dr. James E. Burns, an Irish Catholic physician and quintessential politician, was the first mayor of Glen Cove. He presided over the city from 1918 to 1925 and again from 1930 to 1933. A bachelor, bank founder, and devoted doctor. Burns worked tirelessly for the public good. He advocated for public health and women's suffrage, and served as postmaster from 1933 to 1948.
